Free Radical Tests

Technical details about the test.

There are many ways to test for free radical activity in the body. These include “dry blood” or oxidative tests, serum and urine tests.

This test measures MDA (Malondialdehyde) levels in urine. MDA is a by-product of free radical activity.  MDA urine tests are more accurate than blood tests and can be performed in the home. The Check Up test compares the colour change in a urine sample with a colour chart; the more oxidized fat by-products, the redder the sample.

MDA -  is a highly reactive three carbon dialdehyde produced as a byproduct of polyunsaturated fatty acid peroxidation and arachidonic acid metabolism. MDA readily combines with several functional groups on molecules including proteins, lipoproteins, and DNA.
Lipid peroxidation is a well-established mechanism of cellular injury in both plants and animals, and is used as an indicator of oxidative stress in cells and tissues. Lipid peroxides, derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids, are unstable and decompose to form a complex series of compounds. These include reactive carbonyl compounds, which
MDA is the most abundant. Therefore, measurement of malondialdehyde is widely used as an indicator of lipid peroxidation.  Based on determination of MDA the test is a valid biomarker of oxidative stress with 90% accuracy.

The Free Radical Test kit consists of:

* Collection vessel - container for the sample of mid-stream urine for testing.

* Ampoule - contains chemical compound that will measure the presence of MDA.

* Pipette - to transfer the urine from the test tube to the ampoule.

* Instructions and colour comparison chart to determine the level of free radical activity.

* Guidelines to help you understand your result.

* Review of antioxidants.
